What To Bring to a Meet
In case you are new to the swim team world... here are some suggestions to make your day a little easier:
- Team swimsuit, team cap and goggles — plus backup goggles if you have them
- At least two towels
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
- Warm layers such as a sweatshirt and sweatpants for cool mornings
- A sleeping bag or blanket for swimmers to relax on between events
- Healthy snacks and plenty of water or sports drinks
- Books, cards, games or another quiet activity for downtime between races
- A small first-aid kit and any medications your child may need
- A folding camp chair for parents
Most importantly, a good attitude — swim meets start early and can be long, but they’re a lot of fun!

What to Eat
- Eat normally and well in the days before the meet. Good nutrition throughout the week matters more than one special pre-meet meal.
- Before the meet, choose familiar, easy-to-digest foods. Foods rich in carbohydrates can provide energy without feeling overly heavy.
- Avoid very fatty, spicy or unusually heavy foods immediately before swimming.
- Stay hydrated. Swimmers can become dehydrated even though they are competing in the water.
- Between events, choose light snacks and fluids that your swimmer knows sit well with them.
- Every swimmer is different — stick with foods your child is accustomed to rather than experimenting on meet day.
